Because that seam joins two different roofs. Additions usually carry a lower pitch than the original ranch roofline, and the transition needs its own flashing and membrane detail to behave as one roof. Done properly, the seam outlasts both sides of it; done with roofing cement, it leaks every few winters.
Look at the edges and the gutters. Curled or cupped shingle edges, granules collecting below the downspouts, and exposed fiberglass mat are all signs the shingle has given what it has. Valley sun ages composition roofs from the top down, so a roof that reads tired from the street usually is. An inspection settles it either way, and ours are free.
